New US ambassador to Argentina:
Noah Bryson Mamet has been appointed new US ambassador to Argentina. He is the founder of political consulting firm Noah Mamet & Associates, and used to work for former House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt. He also was a bundler for Obama and the Democratic Party in the 2012 cycle, collecting more than half million dollars.
Noah admitted in a press conference that he has not had the opportunity to go to Argentina and this has raised eyebrows among various political leaders and diplomats. Current government in Argentina is described by various political analysts and economists as the one moving in "anti-democratic direction" and aligning more with the likes of Venezuela and Cuba. At this stage, a strong Foreign Service experience ambassador, who has service experience in different Latin American countries, was expected by both continents and appointment of Noah has raised uproar among various politicians, diplomats, economists, and businesses.
No doubt that Noah has an impressive resume, but on the other hand, he's never been to the country where he's being appointed shines a light on the nature of modern diplomatic appointments. These days high-profile posts go not to Foreign Service professionals but political donors and those otherwise connected to the administration in power.
